All Black Everything

A few short weeks after moving in together, Marissa and I decided to get a pet. We woke up one Saturday morning and headed straight for our local ASPCA. We saw one orange and white kitten, Judy, who was obnoxiously loud. We laughed and instantly decided to go for a quieter pet. The second cat we saw was a 5 month old short haired black kitten, who walked in the room and automatically hid. Right away, Marissa knew that he was the one for us. So without further hestiation, I agreed and Monroe came home with us.

Monroe fits in very well with us. We like to joke that he is Marissa- just in cat form! He greets us at the door when we come home, and he meows hello, back to us. He is messy, but so are we! When we first brought him home, he was very shy. As he grew older, he stopped being so shy and nervous with us, and would play all day with us. However, as he aged he started to wander around the house, calling for someone or something. We would go find him and play with him and cuddle him, but it was never enough. I quickly realized that Marissa and I wouldn’t be enough to keep him entertained. Growing up, I had two kittens who weren’t from the same litter, but who very easily forged a bond. They would play together for hours on end. I mentioned it to Marissa, but we both agreed that we weren’t ready for another pet.

Fast forward to Christmas 2015 . . . It was a pleasant day, that we spent with enjoying oyr gifts and our new pet!! For Christmas, we adopted an adorable 5 month old long haired black kitten. Marissa and I named her Nala, and she settled right into our lives. Nala is the cutest thing ever; She weighs 6 lbs and spends hours sleeping. We adopted her to give Monroe a companion, but also to give ourselves a companion. So far, everything is going well. Monroe was terrified of her at first, but I don’t blame him. Nala walks around growling, and will on occasion hiss. I’m not a fan of the hissing and I pray that she grows out of it, however the growling is pretty cute. Marissa equates her growling to a loud and deep purr. While we think that the growling increases her cuteness factor, for Monroe it’s a baffling experience.

Nonetheless the two are quickly growing to be the best of friends. It’s a huge adjustment to have two pets, instead of one. I can already tell that she’s going to be trouble, but I am grateful for another being to love. So here’s to all black everything!
